Work in process cut in half at AIA

Context

Bordeaux-based AIA (Atelier Industriel de l’Aéronautique – Industrial Aeronautics Workshop) is an organization that reports to DGA (French Defense Procurement Agency). AIA is specialized in servicing and repairing aircraft and helicopter engines for the French Armed Forces (Air Force, Navy, and Army).

Challenge

AIA uses Ortems software to orchestrate and plan repairs and manufacturing in order to optimize the allocation and sequencing of operations so customer due dates are met and shop times are minimized. Work orders (WOs) are planned based on the execution times for each operation and the date the part is needed. Ortems software computes an optimized schedule every day that lets users perform simulations without disrupting the current scheduling process and provides a good analysis of capacity load. One of the major strengths of the Ortems solution is its ability to manage large volumes of data (4,000 WO, 31,000 operations, 400 “machines”) and to quickly develop what-if simulations and optimized schedules.
